The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) operates worldwide nearly for 160 years and it is considered as one of the largest and most influential aid organizations in the world today. The Geneva-based organization belongs to the world's leading contributors to humanitarian missions in conflict and crisis regions. As armed conflicts, wars, and natural disasters are present in our lives continuously, the number of people requiring humanitarian aid and protection is rising sharply therefore the role of humanitarian diplomacy is inevitable. Naturally, the world is changing and humanitarian diplomacy has to adapt to the new environment. Our next distinguished guest will be Peter Maurer, the former president of ICRC who held the position for 10 years and who will guide us through the world of humanitarian diplomacy by sharing his experience including the possibilities and limits of humanitarian diplomacy. He will also reveal the challenges of the principles of humanitarian actions in practice. As an experienced diplomat, he will present a wide range of examples and illustrations from key contexts, like Ukraine, Syria, Afghanistan, the Sahel, the Horn of Africa, and Central America.

PETER MAURER is a Swiss diplomat who served as the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) from 2012 to 2022. During his tenure, he prioritized strengthening humanitarian diplomacy, engaging states and other actors for the respect of international humanitarian law, and improving the humanitarian response through innovation and new approaches. He is a member of the Leadership Council of the World Economic Forum.

A Vöröskereszt Nemzetközi Bizottsága (International Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC) közel 160 éve működik világszerte, és ma a világ egyik legnagyobb és legbefolyásosabb segélyszervezetének számít. A genfi székhelyű szervezet a konfliktus- és válságövezetekben vezető szerepet tölt be humanitárius missziót folytató szervezetek között. A fegyveres konfliktusok, háborúk és természeti katasztrófák gyakoriak, ezért a humanitárius segítségnyújtásra és védelemre szorulók száma nagy arányban emelkedik, ezért a humanitárius diplomácia szerepe nélkülözhetetlen. A változó világban a humanitárius diplomáciának is alkalmazkodni kell a változó környezethez. Következő vendégünk Peter Maurer lesz, aki 10 évig töltötte be az ICRC-ben az elnöki tisztséget. PETER MAURER svájci diplomata, aki 2012 és 2022 között a Vöröskereszt Nemzetközi Bizottságának (ICRC) elnöke volt. Hivatali ideje alatt prioritásként kezelte a humanitárius diplomácia megerősítését, az államok és más szereplők bevonását a nemzetközi humanitárius jog tiszteletben tartásába, valamint a humanitárius segítségnyújtás innováció és új megközelítések révén történő javítását. Jelenleg a Bázeli Kormányzási Intézet (Basel Institute on Governance) elnöke. Továbbá a Világgazdasági Fórum Vezetői Tanácsának tagja.
