Description: Romans and Greeks knew how to create immortal beauty, just imagine the Colosseum of Rome or the buildings of the Acropolis in Athens. Undoubtedly, both are pleasing the eyes even after a period of time beyond human comprehension. As Roger Scruton believed, the beauty was essential in creating a meaningful and fulfilling built environment. But what happened to classical architecture in recent decades? Modern architecture and movements gained ground and currently, the focus is on functionality and efficiency. Architect students have less chance to get familiar with classical architecture at universities therefore they do not have knowledge about it and as a result, it is missing from the practice. Our next lecturer, Conor Lynch has a personal experience with this trend. Among others we will discuss how classical traditions in architecture can be made vivid again and why it is important for the future.

BIO

Conor Lynch lives and works in Winchester, Great Britain, where he designs new buildings and places in the Classical tradition and according to local vernacular character. His university did not permit the design of buildings in the Classical tradition. In order to learn, he studied the masters of the past in an architectural archive in Dublin, Ireland. He has been a guest teacher at two architectural summer schools in Belgium and the Netherlands for the past two years.

Stephen Sholl currently serves as a Team Leader of the International Communications Group. Previously, he participated in both MCC's Budapest Fellowship Program from 2020-2021 and a Visiting Fellow from 2021-2022. Before his current position, he worked with MCC's Architecture and Remembrance Workshop as a Researcher. Through these positions he has researched a diverse field of topics, ranging from Hungarian Communism, American-Hungarian relations, to the role of architecture in politics and culture.

Annak következtében, hogy a modern építészet és mozgalmak teret nyertek, funkcionalitás és a hatékonyság került fókuszba. Napjainkban az építészhallgatóknak kevesebb esélyük van arra, hogy megismerkedjenek a klasszikus építészettel az egyetemeken, nem rendelkeznek róla ismeretekkel, és ennek következtében hiányzik a gyakorlatból is. Következő előadónknak, Conor Lynchnek személyes tapasztalata van ezzel a tendenciával kapcsolatban. Többek között arról fogunk beszélgetni, hogyan lehet újjáéleszteni a klasszikus építészeti hagyományokat, és miért fontos ez a jövő szempontjából.

Conor Lynch a nagy-britanniai Winchesterben él és dolgozik, ahol új épületeket és helyeket tervez a klasszikus hagyományok és a helyi népi karakter szerint. Egyeteme nem engedélyezte a klasszikus hagyomány szerinti épületek tervezését, ezért a tanulás érdekében az írországi Dublinban egy építészeti archívumban tanulmányozta a múlt mestereit. Az elmúlt két évben két építészeti nyári egyetem vendégtanára volt Belgiumban és Hollandiában.

Stephen Sholl jelenleg az MCC Nemzetközi kommunikációs csoportvezetője. 2020-2021 között a Budapest Fellowship Programban, 2021-2022 között az MCC Visiting Fellowship vendégkutatói ösztöndíjprogramban vett részt. Korábban az MCC Építészet és Emlékezet Műhelyében dolgozott kutatóként. Több témában is kutatott, a magyar kommunizmustól kezdve az amerikai-magyar kapcsolatokon át az építészet politikában és a kultúrában betöltött szerepéig.
